MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine put up two goals in the first half, and quickly scored another two minutes into the second half to defeat SMC 3-0 in Malibu, Calif. on Saturday.
Â
Emma Barthel had the first shot of the contest just a minute into the game that missed to the left of the goal, but Pepperdine would begin to pepper the Gaels with shots from there. The Waves attempted six shots before breaking through on their seventh, then had another two attempts before scoring their second goal.
Â
Taylor Poland made four great saves for the Gaels before Pepperdine's first goal, but they would go up 1-0 Tori Waldeck's fifth goal of the season in the 17th minute. The Wave's would go up 2-0 in the 34th minute when they gathered up a loose ball after the Gaels blocked an initial shot, before Tatum Wynalda scored her third goal of the season to extend their lead.Â
Â
In the 37th and 39th minute, Poland made two more solid saves to keep the Gaels in it, as the Waves outshot Saint Mary's 13-3 in the first half. With three minutes remaining in the half, Savannah Schwarze almost cut the deficit to one on a shot that missed just left of the goal.Â
Â
SMC and Pepperdine both attempted six shots in the second half, but the Waves scored on their first shot of the second frame to make it 3-0 Pepperdine on Julia Quinonez' fourth of the season in the 48th minute.
Â
But Saint Mary's kept firing away to try and get back in it. In the 62nd minute Marissa Garcia took a shot straight on that required a save by the Waves goalkeeper Taylor Rath. Only eight seconds later Emily Jensen attempted to the top right side, where it was saved again by Rath. Not even two minutes later, Jensen took another shot for SMC that would be blocked by the Pepperdine defense.Â
Â
The Gaels put three more shots on net in the latter stages of the game, but Pepperdine kept SMC from getting on the board and preserved the shutout.Â
