LOS ANGELES, Calif. - SMC competed in their last game of the season with a 3-0 win over LMU, finishing with a 4-3-1 record in the conference and 10-5-3 record overall.
Being up 1-0 in the first half, the Gaels continued to attack the Lion's territory to put two more in the back of the net.
In the 24th minute LMU Alex Hobbs challenged SMC goalkeeper Taylor Poland six yards out, but Poland came out at the near post and blocked the shot.
At the 31st first minute, Tessa Salvestrin makes a long pass outside the 18 yard mark to Savannah Schwarze. Schwarze fires a shot, but LMU goalkeeper Ellie Sommers puts a hand on the ball causing it to go over the crossbar.
Just one minute later Salvestrin forces a turnover at the midfield where she passes to teammate Makena Carr at the top of the box allowing Carr to shoot with her right foot to the right side of the goal and putting the first goal up for the Gaels.
Towards the beginning of the second half, SMC began to counter with Emily Jensen connecting a pass to Kyllie Glock. Glock shot the ball with a bend trying to get it past Sommers, but once again Sommers punched the ball over the crossbar.
In the 63rd minute, Freshman Emmie Ennis drove the ball down to the Lions box where she was pushed from behind earning a penalty for the team. Senior Emma Barthel was chosen to take the penalty where she shot to the bottom right side of the net, giving the Gaels a 2-0 lead.
With eight minutes remaining in the game, SMC put their last goal in the back of the net. Barthel makes a pass to the outside of Carr, allowing Carr to make the perfect pass to Schwarze right in front of LMU goalkeeper, where Schwarze finished with her left foot.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
SMC controlled the game with 56% possession time compared to LMU 44%. The Gaels outshot the Lions 16 to 6 throughout the game. Saint Mary's defense stepped up only allowing LMU to put two shots on goals, where Poland saved both.
