PORTLAND, Ore. – SMC Track and Field wrapped up the 2023 season in style as the women's team took on the Portland Distance Carnival. Nine Gaels made the trip to Lewis & Clark College, as they all aimed to set new personal bests to conclude the spring season.
LEADING OFF
Maddie Fletcher got the action going for the Gaels with the 400m. Races began in the early afternoon, with the 400m as one of the first events of the day. Fletcher set a personal best in the event, running a 59.30 and finishing 5th in the field out of nine runners. Her previous best came a few weeks ago at the Fresno State Invite where she ran 59.41.
Maddie Fletcher was back in action just a short time later, this time for the 200m. She finished 3rd out of 8 runners with a 26.72, just missing her 26.47 personal best she set last week at the West Coast Last Chance Meet.
In the 800m, Penelopea Gordon and Klara Frih ran solid races for the Gaels. Gordon snatched 3rd overall with a 2:07.27. Gordon ended her historic freshman season in style, once again dropping time in her go-to event, dropping another second off the time she ran last week at the West Coast Last Chance.
Gordon was in some elite company, as she was just four seconds off Raevyn Rogers who is an Olympic Bronze medalist in the event. In second place was Alli Cash, a multiple time All American. Gordon also finished one spot ahead of Guiping Zhang, a professional runner from China.
Klara Frih set a new personal best as well, coming home in 6th place with a 2:10.93, besting her 2:11.87 from the Bryan Clay Invitational back in April.
Dani Rowlinson and Molly Dreher were the sole representatives for SMC in the 1500m. Dreher finished on the podium, finishing 3rd with a 4:25.46. She smoked her previous personal best of 4:30.19 which she ran last year at the West Coast Last Chance.
Rowlinson ran a solid race, finishing 15th overall. Her 4:35.96 was just half a second off her personal best she ran last week at the West Coast Last Chance Meet.
The biggest event of the day for SMC was the 5000m, as four Gaels competed in the grueling 12.5 lap race.
Kaylee Barnes led the way for the Gaels, finishing 7th out of 28 runners. Her 17:36.63 was a solid run to finish the season, as she just missed her personal best by five seconds.
Anna Ranieri crossed the line in 13th with a 18:09.63, with her teammate Emily Field finishing just a few spots behind in 15th with a 18:17.08.
Sofia Cuevas rounded out the field for the Gaels, finishing 22nd with a 18:49.23.
