SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – SMC Men's Soccer Keeper
Jack Landreth has been named the WCC Defensive Player of the Week for the Week of September 18.
Â
Landreth recorded his third shutout of the season with four saves against UC Davis, and helped the Gaels to a 3-2 win over Sac State during the past week. He made his presence felt right away with two big saves in the 10th minute against the Aggies. The first stop was a sprawling save to his right, followed by him smothering second shot from close range.
Â
The junior made a leaping save in 25th minute off a set piece, where Landreth had to jump backwards and punch the ball away from the top left corner of the net. The Washington native collided with post on the save attempt, sacrificing his body to keep the ball out, and was briefly attended to by the trainer before remaining in the game.
Â
Landreth made another big kick save in the 78th minute after an Aggie got to a header just in front of Landreth, as the Gaels keeper made a stop from close range.
Â
Landreth is in his second season with SMC after transferring from Cal State East Bay last season, and has started every game in goal for the Gaels this season after starting in five games in six appearances with one shutout last year.
Â
It's the second WCC University Credit Union Defensive Player of the Week Award for Saint Mary's this season, with freshman
George Herbert winning the other back on September 4. The Gaels remain on the road this week when they take on No. 1 Stanford at 7:00 p.m. this Friday, September 22.
