MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Men's Soccer came out in attack mode and stayed that way in a 3-1 win Friday night over San Jose State in Moraga.
The Gaels (3-1-1) again peppered their opponent with shots, firing 20 total salvos with seven on target, and Storm Schmidt Hollensted scored his first two goals as a Gael to provide the game winner SMC.
STORMING IN
Hollensted struck for his first goal just over two minutes into the game on a leaping header by at the left corner of six-yard area. The University of the Cumberlands transfer twisted his body in midair to have his back to the goal and head home a cross from Tyler Hardin to make it 1-0 Gaels.
The Spartans (1-2-2) would answer with a goal of their own just three minutes later. After a corner piece was played short, a cross into the box was redirected by a leaping left-foot out of midair into the six-yard box and was redirected again by Niklas Dossman with his left foot into the far corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
But the Storm kept brewing and he would give the Gaels the lead again for good on an absolute laser beam of a shot in the 12th minute. The Glostrup, Denmark native blasted a right-footed shot from just inside the penalty area into the lower right corner of the net for a 2-1 Gaels lead.
CLOSING IT OUT
SJSU threatened to tie in the 77th minute, but keeper Jack Landreth dove to his left to make a sprawling, two-handed save to preserve the Gaels lead. In the 82nd minute, SMC would provide themselves with a bit of cushion by going up 3-1.
Jude Zamora fed a long pass downfield to Wade Muttitt, who deked defenders and set up a wide-open Riley Lynch who chipped it home for his third goal of the season and effectively seal the win for Saint Mary's.
The Gaels are now 16-17-2 all time against San Jose State, but have won five straight against the Spartans, six of the last seven, and have only lost once to them dating back to 2007 covering 11 meetings.
UP NEXT
The Gaels will make their first road trip of the season when they head down to Irvine, Calif. to take on the Anteaters of UC Irvine on Monday, September 11 at 6:00 p.m.
