MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina — Former Saint Mary's great Diamon Simpson will continue his incredible 16 year professional career this season, signing with Penarol Mar Del Plata in Mar del Plata, Argentina. After four years at Saint Mary's (2005-09), Simpson has spent his professional career traversing the globe, playing for professional clubs on five continents. Simpson will now join his third club in Argentino, Penarol Mar Del Plata, after spending previous seasons with Quimsa (2020-21) and Riachuelo de la Rioja (2023).
Simpson was a three time All-WCC student-athlete for Saint Mary's. A tenacious rebounder and defender, Simpson still holds the Saint Mary's records for free throws made (470), free throws attempted (777), rebounds (1130) and steals (174). He is one of only two Gaels to record 1000 points and 1000 rebounds in his career, the other being teammate Omar Samhan. Simpson also ranks second in program history in blocked shots, with 239. In his junior season, Simpson helped lead the Gaels to their first NCAA Tournament in three years. Following his time at Saint Mary's, Simpson began his professional career with the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Developmental League before heading abroad where his career has continued for the past 16 years.
Simpson now joins a Penarol Mar Del Plata team that features former NBA player Al Thornton. With five Argentinian titles in their club's history, they rank second most in the La Liga Nacional de Basquetbol in Argentina, but have not won a title since the 2013-14 season. Simpson will hope to change that in the 2023-24 season.
