MORAGA, Calif. - On Wednesday, November 20th, the 2024 WCC All-Conference teams and awards were announced with
Wade Muttitt,
Ian Smith and
Cesar Batres earning Honorable Mention status. Muttitt led the team with four goals and a pair of assists while
Ian Smith and
Cesar Batres helped anchor the Gaels defense, both recording over 1,000 minutes of action. Batres was also named to the WCC All-Freshman team as he added a pair of goals and made 14 starts in his first collegiate season.
#7 Wade Muttitt | Sr. | F | Crowthrone, England
Senior forward
Wade Muttitt concluded his three-year Saint Mary's career with 13 goals, seven assists and 49 games played. Muttitt added his third straight all-conference selection this season, earning Honorable Mention status with a team high four goals and two assists. He becomes the third Gael in the last two years to earn three straight all-conference selections (
Riley Lynch and
Louis Sterobo, 2021-23).
Muttitt was the heart and soul of the team's offensive attack. His season highlight came in the team's 2-0 victory over Cal Poly in which he scored the game winner with a terrific strike from his right foot to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead. As a team, Saint Mary's was 2-0-2 when Muttitt found the back of the net. He finished with 16 games played, 14 starts and 883 minutes played.
#13 Cesar Batres | Fr. | MF | McKinney, Texas
Cesar Batres made a direct impact in his freshman season as the Texas native finished with 16 games played, 14 starts, two goals, an assist and over 1,000 minutes of action. Batres scored his first collegiate goal with a one-time volley in the team's 3-1 victory over Gonzaga. He added his second career goal in the season finale against Pacific last weekend and also recorded his first assist in a gritty 2-2 draw with Portland.
Batres did a little bit of everything in the Gaels midfield as he was one of the team's best 1-v-1 defenders and also helped maintain possession and initiate the attack going forward. He becomes the first player to earn both an all-conference selection and be named to the all-freshman team in the same season since
Riley Lynch did so in 2021.
#17 Ian Smith | So. | D | Kaiserslautern, Germany
Ian Smith took a big leap in his sophomore season playing in a career high 15 games and making 12 starts. After joining the program as a true freshman from Germany in 2023, Smith was originally an attacking winger for the Gaels but made the switch to outside back last spring and never looked back.
Smith was a dynamic box-to-box player for the Gaels and was also an outstanding 1-v-1 defender with great pace and athleticism. Smith scored his first career goal in a wild 2-2 draw against Dartmouth in the team's non-conference schedule. After finding themselves down two goals at the half, Saint Mary's stormed back with a pair of second half goals including the game tying goal from Smith in the 83rd minute. He finished the season with a career high 1,111 minutes played and earned his first all-conference selection of his career.
