BASE | Reitz Allows Just One Run as Gaels Take Series Versus Oakland

MORAGA, Calif. -
Saint Mary's Baseball took the series against Oakland University on Sunday, again racking up double-digits runs and getting a gem from big right hander Jason Reitz.

In the bottom of the third, Coleman Schmidt set the tone for the Gael's offense, with a double, followed by Nathan Chong's first home run of the season into the netting just over the top of the right field wall giving the Gaels a 4-0 lead.

The offense continued to generate scoring opportunities, when Brian Duroff, the transfer from Chabot College tripled into left-center. Ryan Pierce, a transfer from Los Medanos College, brought him home with a sharply hit ground ball to the third baseman that backed him up, and left him no chance for a play at the plate.

The Gaels sustain their offensive onslaught, when Jared Mettam drew a walk and advanced to third on a pair of balls that got away from the Golden Grizzlies catcher. Gavin Napier drove Mettam home with a ground ball to the second baseman for an RBI ground out.

Retiz kept the Golden Grizzlies to one hit through the fifth but ran into a little trouble giving up a pair of walks and a two hits, but held Oakland to just one run and two stranded base runners. He finished with eight strikeouts and three walks through five innings to collect the win.

In the Bottom of the 5th, the Gaels answered right back, as Brian Duroff started the par with a double following a 433-foot homer over the scoreboard by Connor "Bear" Harrison. The Freshman went 3 for 4 in the game and continues to show why he was such a decorated athlete at De La Salle High and D-1 Baseball's pick for the WCC Freshman of the Year.

The Golden Grizzlies put the ball in play against the Gaels bullpen, and took advantage of some sloppy defense by SMC when their younger players got in the game, with five runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth, before Preston Howey closed out to the game to secure the 11-8 win.
