SB | Freshman Sam Buckley Takes Home First WCC Player of the Week Honors

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The accolades continue to roll in for Saint Mary's Softball Student-Athletes, as this week, freshman third baseman Sam Buckley was honored as the WCC Player of the Week. She is the third Gael to be honored with a WCC Weekly award over the first two weeks of the season, and is the second freshman, joining Mia Nishikawa, who won WCC Pitcher of the Week last week.
Buckley once again was a driving force for the Gaels offense this week. The Burbank, California native went 5-for-13 (.385) at the plate in the Gaels five games at the Fresno State Invitational. Four of her five hits were of the extra base variety, including her first two collegiate home runs. Of Buckley's 10 hits on the season, six have been for extra bases. Buckley also drove in seven runs for the Gaels on the weekend, as she now leads Saint Mary's with 12 RBI in her first 10 games. Adding to her impressive resume, Buckley also boasted a perfect fielding percentage for the weekend.
Buckley and the Gaels will gear up for the Welter Classic in Bakersfield this weekend, where they will take on Montana and CSU Bakersfield respectively on both Friday, February 23 and Saturday, February 24.
