BVB | Gaels Show Grit and Fortitude, Earning Pair of 3-2 Victories on Day One of Battle of the Bay

STANFORD, Calif. — The first two matches of Stanford Beach Volleyball's annual Battle of the Bay, featured the Gaels (3-1), taking on the San Jose State Spartans (0-2) and the UC Davis Aggies (4-1). Both matches came down to the final flight, but the Gaels hung on to defeat both the Spartans and Aggies by 3-2 scores.
AJ Slojkowski and Karmin Brown got things going for the Gaels out of the four spot with a decisive 21-16, 21-18 victory, looking in control of the match from start to finish. The Spartans tied things up at one apiece, before Paola Peralta and Nya Crump rallied back from a second set deficit to earn a 21-10, 22-20 victory, and again put the Gaels ahead. Again, the Spartans drew level, and the Gaels final pair of Angie Bour and Allie Cataldo played to a third set for the match. Cataldo and Bour regrouped after dropping the second set 22-20 to take the match winning set 15-9, earning the Gaels their first win of the weekend and second consecutive win of the season.
Hawley Harrer and Hannah Couch opened match two with UC Davis with a win, but the Gaels found themselves behind 2-1 and in need of two consecutive victories to move their winning streak to three. They got the first half of that need when Cataldo and Bour dispatched the Aggie third flight 21-16, 21-18, putting the match on Peralta and Crumps' shoulders. The duo battled back from an early deficit in set one, ultimately taking it 26-24, and then took the match winning set 21-18, handing UC Davis their first loss of the season.
The Gaels will take on sixth ranked TCU and Oregon tomorrow at 8 AM and 12 PM respectively.
