BASE | 8-1 Win for Gaels in Game One of Double Header, Seattle Comes Back in Game Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 EVERETT, Wash. – Saint Mary's Baseball took game one of their double header at Seattle University by a score of 8-1 in a scheduled seven-inning game on Saturday afternoon. Game two was suspended due to rain and was resumed on Saturday morning back in Seattle, with SMC ahead 9-7 in the middle of the fourth, but the Redhawks came back to win 11-10.

The Gaels used a long-ball and small-ball mix all day on their way to 15 run over 11 innings, helping them take control of game one and bring them back in game two.

GAME ONE
The scoring started in game one when Ryan Pierce launched his fourth home run of the season out to left for a 1-0 Gaels lead in the second inning.

They'd continue the scoring in the third after Gavin Napier drew a walk, advanced to second on a Christian Almanza ground out, and moved to third on a wild pitch. He would come in to score on a Coleman Schmidt triple out to left center and it's was 2-0 Saint Mary's. Pierce would drive in Schmidt with a base hit to left, and though he'd be thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double, he put the Gaels on top 3-0 after the top of the third.

It would be more small ball in the fourth with infield singles from Dalton Mashore and then Jared Mettam making it 4-0 Saint Mary's. But they'd return to the long ball just two batters later when Almanza belted a three-run blast (4) to right, and the Gaels were out to a 7-0 lead.

A sac fly would get the Redhawks on the board in the bottom of the fourth, but Almanza would give SMC their seven-run lead back in the seventh on an Almanza solo home run (5) to make it 8-1 Gaels.

Throughout this offensive onslaught from the Gaels, starting pitcher Dylan Delvecchio delivered another solid performance, going five innings while allowing just one run to collect his first win at SMC. The transfer from Tarleton State allowed just four hits and one walk with five strikeouts, and has a 1.80 ERA through 14.1 innings this season.

Senior Ryan Wiltse would close it out for Saint Mary's with two perfect innings and four strikeouts. The Fresno, Calif. native has allowed just one earned run over six innings so far this year.

GAME TWO
SMC got out to an early 2-0 lead in the second game of the twin billing with some small ball. Mashore drew a two-out walk and Anthony Pomilia singled to right, before Pomilia stole second. That allowed Mashore to break for home and make it a 1-0 game in the top of the second. Tanner Griffith would single to left to score Pomilia and it was a 2-0 lead for the Gaels.

But the Redhawks put a seven-run rally together in the bottom of the inning, with the first run scored via a lead-off home run. That was followed by a run-scoring double, a bases-loaded walk, and two singles for a 7-2 Seattle lead that chased starter Connor Linchey before Adam Enyart got the final out of the second.

But the Gaels offense went back to long ball and picked up their Pre-Season All-WCC pitcher. Napier was hit by a pitch to start the third, and Almanza homered (6) to right to cut it to 7-4. Singles by Schmidt and Pierce were followed by a fielder's choice off the bat of Brian Duroff, before a two-out dinger from Mashore (4) to tie the game at 7-7.

Saint Mary's would take the lead in the fourth when Duroff homered (2) down the left field line with Schmidt on base to make it a 9-7 contest, before the game was suspended in the middle of the fourth after an initial 15-minute rain delay.

The game finish at a different stadium than it began when it resumed at 12:00 p.m. Sunday back on Seattle's campus, after Saturday's games were played at Everett Stadium's turf field.

A Napier RBI ground out added to the Gaels lead when it plated Mashore for a 10-7 advantage. But Seattle would strike with two runs in the sixth and seventh innings. A two-run home run off of Ryan Sanders in the sixth made it a one-run game, and a two-run double of John Damozonio put the Redhawks ahead in the seventh.

Seattle was able to hold the Gaels to a Schmidt single over the final two innings to get game two of the series.
