SAN DIEGO – The USD Toreros salvaged a game with a 16-2 win over Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon after the Gaels swept Friday's double header. San Diego took advantage of SMC's sloppiness, as the Gaels committed four errors, issued three balks, and hit six batters.
Â
Saint Mary's struck first after Napier walked, Almanza doubled, and
Coleman Schmidt hit a sac fly to go up 1-0 in the first inning. But USD answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning with an RBI groundout, a pair of singles, and a bases-loaded walk to go up 4-1.
Â
Brian Duroff hit his seventh home run of the season in the top of the fourth to make it a 4-2 game, but San Diego would take over from there. They would get two more runs on an RBI single and an error by pitcher
Jason Reitz in the bottom of the inning for a 6-2 lead.
Â
They would get four more runs in the sixth inning on a base hit, a fielder's choice, a balk, and a throwing error at third for a 10-2 game. An RBI ground out and a run-scoring single plated two more in the seventh to make it a 12-2 contest, before tacking on four more in the eighth to make it 16-2.
