MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's Golf will return to the Cactus State for the first time since late January to take part in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, played at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course in Maricopa. This is the second consecutive season that the Gaels have taken part in the Cowboy Classic, as they took home 15th place out of a 21 team field, led by Kristian Bressum's 219 (+3). Last year's event was held at a different location, however, taking place at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Arizona.
This season's tournament will feature 23 teams in total, including seven team ranked in the latest top-100 (Saint Mary's, Cal State Fullerton, Grand Canyon, Kansas, Kennesaw State, Long Beach State, and UNLV). The Gaels checked in ranked 77th in the latest NCAA Division I rankings according to Spikemark. Long Beach State holds the highest ranking of any team in the field at #48.
Consistently ranked one of the top-10 golf courses to play in the state of Arizona by Golfweek, Ak-Chin Southern Dunes plays 7546 yards as a par 72 course. The course opened in 2002 and was designed by Brian Curley and Fred Couples. Since its opening, it has served as the site of numerous tournaments and is an U.S. Open qualifying site.
The last time the Gaels were in action, they took on the Pauma Valley Invitational, where they used a strong final round to pull themselves from 15th to 11th place overall. Kristian Bressum was the Gaels best performer in the tournament, finishing tied for 22nd place with a score of 213 (E). That said, Connor Reis, Jack Jerge, Mitchell Hoey and Aidan Lee all had their best showings in the final 18 holes of the tournament, and were all major contributors in the Gaels climb out of the cellar in that event. Lee shot a 68 in the final round, the best round of any Gael at the tournament.
The tournament will be stated live on golfstat.
