HAYWARD, Calif. - The Saint Mary's Women's Tennis team competed in the two day Mike Fanelli Classic with heavy rain and wind throughout both days.
The Women's Team:
Once again Rayna won an overall event, coming in at a time of 2:07.70 for the 800 meters, 1.21 seconds off of her best time.
Luz Mercado was the section three heat winner for this event, finishing in fourth overall with a time of 2:10.91.
Multiple Gaels competed in the 5K, two placing in the all time record for SMC.
Kaylee Barnes came in 17th overall for Saint Mary's with a time of 17:04.91, sixth best all time, and Freshman
Eleanor Jepsen came in 2.94 seconds behind her, securing 21st place. This was Jepsen's first time competing as a Gael in the 5K, placing eighth all time at Saint Mary's.
Emily Fields,
Michaela Martin, and
Lauren Buckley all PRed in the 5K with new times of 17:41.80, 18:03.29, and 18:26.76 respectively.
The Gaels recently began competing in the Javelin Throw where
Jaden DeSouza set a new record at 27.12m.
After the teams two day competition, Women's Head Coach
Marty Kinsey said, "Saturday started off with very adverse weather conditions with lots of rain and high gusts of wind. During that time our sprinters and 1500 m racers took the track. They competed very well despite the conditions. Hours later into the evening, the weather settled down for the 5K runners, and the lady girls crushed it. All five ran personal best, and had significant improvements."
The Men's Team:
Spencer Wirshing was the first Gael to finish in the 800 meter, with a PR of 1:52.09 and coming in second for Saint Mary's all time record.
In the 10K two Gaels placed in the SMC all time record, along with three others who PRed.
Cayden Hein secured 16th overall in this event, along with taking the seventh SMC all time, coming in at 30:40.61. Only 1.03 seconds behind Hein was the Junior, Francisco Felix, defending the 18th overall and eighth in Saint Mary's.
Continuing in the 10K,
Luke Bland broke his personal record by clocking in at a new time of 31:29.52,
Troy Coulston PRed coming in at 31:59.05, and lastly Adidan Donovan came in at his best time of 32.09.15.
In the 1500 meters,
Eric Martinez took 30th overall coming in at a time of 3:57.62, his new personal best.
After a long windy two days, Men's Head Coach,
Harlan Lopez said, "Overall the weekend had mixed results. The weather Friday brought poor racing conditions and our guys fought hard but it was a slow day overall. With the weather change Saturday we saw guys get great opportunities to compete well and with that came fast times. The group that raced Saturday took advantage of the near perfect conditions."
