MORAGA, Calif. — Coming off of their momentous win at the El Macero Classic, Saint Mary's Golf is set for the WCC Tournament with their sights set on earning a spot in the NCAA Regionals. The tournament is set to take place at the Gold Mountain Golf Club Olympic Course in Bremerton, Washington, a course that the Gaels saw this fall in the Husky Invitational.
The tournament format has changed this season, and will feature three round of stroke play qualifying, rounds one and two taking place on Friday, and round three taking place on Saturday. The top four teams will qualify for the match play semifinals and finals on Sunday.
Saint Mary's enters the tournament as the fifth highest ranked WCC school according to Spikemark at #78. Ranked ahead of them are LMU (#44), Pepperdine (#54), San Diego (#57), and San Francisco (#72), while Santa Clara (#105), Pacific (#136) and Gonzaga (#181) are all ranked behind the Gaels. 81 teams are selected to move onto the 2024 NCAA Regionals, and the Gaels are squarely on the bubble, and will need a convincing performance to move into the national postseason.
The Gaels will walk out a lineup of Connor Reis, Kristian Bressum, Jack Jerge, Mitchell Hoey and Aidan Lee, with Zack Missigman serving as the substitute. Reis leads the group with a 71.1 scoring average this season, including a win at the Nick Watney Invitational, where he shot a -18 over the 54 hole event. Bressum has put together a slightly better scoring average than Reis this season at 70.9, but has not finished higher than fourth place in a tournament this season. True freshman Jack Jerge is coming off of his best performance of the season at the El Macero Classic, finishing third and bringing his scoring average to 72.3. In the four spot for the Gaels is Hoey, who's scoring average is just a tick over Jerge's at 72.4, while #5 golfer Aidan Lee enter with a scoring average of 73.0 to round out the group. The last time this team took the course in Bremerton, Washington, Connor Reis led the way with a 54 hole score of +2, while Kristian Bressum and Jack Jerge each shot a team best 70 (-2) in the first round.
The Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Course is an undulating course that features open fairways flanked by heavier foliage sculpted by the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. The course record sits at 65 and has played host to two NCAA Regionals and two US Junior Amateur Championships.
Play for the tournament opens tomorrow at 7:30 AM, however, the first Gael to hit the links will be Aidan Lee at 8:20 AM. Follow along all weekend long here.
