SURREY, B.C. — Continuing her brilliant post-collegiate career, former Gael Softball standout Alex Casas recently competed for Team Mexico in the 2024 Canada Cup. The Canada Cup International Softball Championship is operated by the Canadian Amateur Sport Society, and is devoted to providing young, high caliber, female athletes the opportunity to expand their potential and ability by fielding elite level fastpitch teams, offer exposure to potential university and college scholarships, provide a source of inspiration and mentorship to the youth of the sport and provide an entertaining, fun-filled sporting experience for the Canada Cup spectator.
Throughout the tournament, Team Mexico proved to be one of the top teams, going 4-1 in pool play to taking second place in their pool and earning a guaranteed spot in the Championship bracket. In the double elimination playoff format, Team Mexico dropped their opener to Triple Crown Colorado, the team representative for the United States, before winning back-to-back contests over Israel and Australia to guarantee themselves a top-three finish. There, they would once again meet up with Triple Crown Colorado, falling for a second time to the American team, and rounding out their tournament with a 6-3 record, good for third place. Throughout the tournament, Team Mexico outscored opponents 62-31 and only fell to tournament champs Canada and tournament runner-ups Triple Crown Colorado.
At the culmination of the tournament, Casas was honored with the Suzy Brazney Award. Named for USA Softball Hall of Famer Suzy Brazney, is awarded to the most outstanding catcher in the Canada Cup International Softball Championship.
