WSOC | Gaels Head to Portland to Open Conference Play

MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women soccer team open conference play in Portland where they will compete at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex at 7 P.M. on Saturday, September 28th. The Gaels have a 7-26-3 overall record and the two teams tied in their last match up in November of 2023.

GAELS RECAP
In the first few minutes of the game, there were back and forth shots between UC Riverside and Saint Mary's. The Gaels were able to pick up some momentum with Taylour Mendoza attempting a shot and 42 seconds later Taylor Kessler had a shot  saved by the Highlanders goalkeeper. 
 
Michaela Romo stepped onto the field in the 30th minute  and within six minutes, she scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Maddie Lucas. This is Romo's second goal of her collegiate career and Lucas's first assist of the season. 
 
With the Gaels being up in the first half, the Highlanders made a push to equalize by earning a penalty in the 52nd minute. . Kate Plachy stepped up and blocked the penalty to stop UCR from tying the match. . Plachy has put together a solid season so far as she finished the match with four saves and recorded her third shutout of the season, tied for the conference lead..
 
By the end of the match, SMC outshot UC Riverside 15-6 with six shots on target and held 53% of the possession to pick up their third win of the season. . 
 
ABOUT PORTLAND (WCC)
The Pilots are coming out of a 10-4-3 2023 season with Michelle French as their head coach in her sixth season. Over the last two years French has had back to back seasons with at least 10 wins for the first time since 2013. Portland is currently leading the West Coast Conference in goals with 10. Graduate Student Hailey Still is the Pilots leading scorer with seven goals and Junior Isabella Yakel leads Portland in assists with four in the season. The Pilots are looking to get their sixth win of the season and enter Saturday's match with a 1-0-2 record in their last three games
