VB | Gaels Fall in Four Hard Fought Sets to LMU

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's Volleyball (4-7, 0-2 WCC) put up a monumental effort against LMU (10-3, 2-0 WCC) on Saturday afternoon, but were narrowly edged out by the Lions in four sets. The Gaels swung at a higher percentage than the Lions and outblocked the best blocking team in the conference, but a strong performance from the LMU's serve and back row were enough to stave off multiple SMC runs.

The Gaels fell behind in an early 8-2 LMU run, but battled through the adversity to knot things up at 13 apiece. A Hannah Taylor kill would give the Gaels their first lead at 15-14, but each squad would continue to trade sideouts. A Genevieve Bane kill would put the Gaels back within one at 22-21, but the Lions would polish off the set with three straight points, taking it 25-21. Bane got out to a great start for SMC with five kills on her first nine swings to just one error.

Saint Mary's came storming back in set two, building an early 7-3 lead. The Lions would respond with an 8-3 run of their own to take their first lead, and built off of that to take a 19-16 lead. That's when Tessa Schouten helped spark a 6-0 run that featured three of her blocks. That would give Saint Mary's enough of a cushion to take the second set 25-23. The Gaels committed just one error for the set, and racked up five blocks, including the three from Schouten.

The Gaels took an 18-13 lead late in the third set, but saw that quickly evaporate with an 8-0 LMU run, eventually taking the set 25-20. Abby Castillon put together her best set of the match with four kills on eight swings.

In the final set, the Gaels leaned heavily on Hannah Taylor, all the way to a 24-24 tie, but the Lions polished things off with the final two points of the set. Taylor had seven kills in the final set, while Natalie Peete had six massive digs in the Gaels effort to stave off defeat.

Genevieve Bane logged a team-high 14 kills, with Hannah Taylor going for 11 and Abby Castillon adding 10. Hailee Garcia led the way with 22 assists, with Madi Zorn adding 20. Each setter also added an ace. Starting at libero, Natalie Peete had a career-high 15 digs, with Castillon and Bane each chipping in 10. It was the best blocking performance on the season for the Gaels, with Kaliko Kealoha roofing seven and Clarissa Klein denying six Lion attacks.

DOUBLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Genevieve Bane and Abby Castillon were outstanding for the Gaels today, each with another double-double for the resume. Bane went for a team-best 14 kills and added 10 digs, while Castillon finished just behind her with 10 kills and 10 digs. The duo have combined for five double-doubles on this season.

FLIPPING THE SCRIPT AT THE NET
LMU came into the match as the best blocking team in the WCC, but it was the Gaels who out performed the Lions at the net. The Gaels logged 13 blocks to the Lions 10. Leading the charge was Kaliko Kealoha with seven blocks, while Clarissa Klein went for six, tying her career-high.
