FAIRFIELD, Calif. - It was a tough day out on the course for the Gaels as they just barely missed out on making the top four and advancing to the match-play portion of the WCC Championships. The Gaels went into today with an eight-stroke lead and in fourth place, with their fate in their own hands. The Gaels still had a good showing in the third round of stroke play, shooting a combined 282 six-under par. The rest of the field, however, had some immaculate rounds that led to the Gaels' surrender of fourth place.
Aidan Lee had an up-and-down day where he fought hard on the difficult back nine after being two under on the front, but slid back to even with two bogeys on the fourteenth and seventeenth holes. Zack Missigman bounced back today as well, having his first day of the tournament under par at (-1). A back nine with no shapes, and a front nine that saw him collect three birdies to get him to one-under.
With a few holes left to play from Pacific, they fell behind to the Gaels for the fourth and final spot, but climbed their way back after a hole out on the 17th from the bunker and a birdie on the 18th to force a playoff. All five team members faced off in a one vs. one shotgun playoff on holes 10-14; some of the more challenging holes on the course in which Pacific just snuck past the Gaels.
Avery started off the playoff holes with a par vs Pacific's birdie to go one down. Aidan then matched Pacific with a par. Go Nakatsukasa would once again match Pacific's birdie with a birdie of his own to keep things level. Missigman would record a bogey on the last vs Pacific's par to drop the Gaels down to two back to conclude the playoff finishing 18-20, even-par to two-under par.
Avery Lazarski was the one to help propel the Gaels to their t-4th place finish at the WCC Championships. He kept it clean out on the course, having a bogey-free scorecard on the day, which included an eagle and five birdies (-7). This would also boost his individual ranking to t-7th, moving up fourteen spots on the final day. Fellow Gael Connor Reis joined Lazarski in t-7th place individually after a (+2) round to conclude his outing.
The Gaels fell just short of making the second part of the weekend, but still had impressive showings from their starting five. The team finished second in total eagles and first in total pars. They also had two top-10 finishers in Lazarski and Reis. After an Impressive season, they will look forward to competing in summer competitions and prepare for their fall campaign starting in September.
