MORAGA, Calif. - On Monday, April 28th the West Coast Conference announced their weekly awards with Saint Mary's
Eddie Madrigal and
Ian Armstrong taking home Player and Freshman of the Week honors. The Gaels have won seven of their last eight games and went 3-1 this past week, standing as one of the hottest teams in the WCC.
#13 Eddie Madrigal | WCC Player of the Week | April 28th
Madrigal had himself a career weekend, smashing four home runs including his first multi-homer game in the series opener. Madrigal homered in back-to-back innings on Friday, first with a solo shot in the fifth and then a grand slam that broke the game open in the sixth inning.
Madrigal now owns the outright lead for home runs in the WCC with 14 and is putting himself firmly in the Player of the Year conversation. He leads the league in slugging (.717), OPS (1.182), RBI (50), homers (14) and has a .368 batting average good for third highest in the WCC. This is his first career WCC weekly award in his three years as a Gael.
#38 Ian Armstrong | WCC Freshman of the Week | April 28th
For the second time this season,
Ian Armstrong has been named the WCC Freshman of the Week. Armstrong has been a staple behind the plate for the Gaels after losing their two starters from a season ago in Bear Harrison and
Nathan Chong. He finished his four-game week with a .467 batting average, five runs scored, a double, a home run and two RBI.
Armstrong homered in game two of their weekend series with LMU for his fourth of the year and has now eclipsed the .300 mark with a .306 season batting average. He recorded a career high three hits twice on the weekend, going 3-for-4 from the plate in game two and then game three of the series. Armstrong has been a great 1-2 punch for the Gaels at the bottom of their lineup, batting eighth behind the dynamic
Tanner Griffith before turning the lineup over.
Armstrong became the first SMC freshman to win the weekly award multiple times in a single season since the award was established in 2024. Saint Mary's will head to Reno to take on Nevada for their midweek matchup and will then visit Stockton for a three-game set with Pacific starting on Friday, May 2nd at 6:00 PM.
