WTRACK | Gaels Compete in Three Events Around the Bay Area in Extremely Successful Weekend
4/5/2025 6:27:00 PM | Women's Track and Field
SAN FRANCISCO, STANFORD and BERKELEY, Calif – In what would prove to be the busiest weekend of the season for Saint Mary's Women's Track and Field, the Gaels competed in three separate meets spanning from Friday into Saturday, taking part in the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, the Stanford Invitational and the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in San Francisco, Stanford and Berkeley respectively. 21 different Gaels competed in 11 different events, with nine top-10 finishes for the week.
Nine different Gaels made the trek across the Bay Bridge to take part in the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, hosted by San Francisco. Seven of those nine competed in the 5000m as part of a 136 runner field. Eleanor Jepsen was the Gaels best finisher, placing 37th with a time of 17:07.64, a new PR by 0.21 seconds. Her previous PR was set at this same event last year. Also finishing in the top 50 was Emily Field, who placed 45th with a time of 17:23.68. Two Gaels, Jane Carney and Britney Perera, competed in the 3000m steeplechase, with Carney pacing the two with a time of 12:11.09.
30 miles south at Stanford, the Gaels had three runners compete at an elite level in the Stanford Invitational. Headlining the group was Kaylee Barnes, who bested her 3000m steeplechase PR by nearly 20 seconds, good for second place in her section. The time of 10:24.84 was a new 3000m steeplechase school record, and was good enough to qualify her for NCAA Regionals, as she will join teammate Rayna Stanziano there in May. Speaking about Stanziano, she placed fifth in her section of the 5000m with a time of 15:46.51. This was also a PR, a school record and a regional qualifying mark. Jaden DeSouza rounded out the Gael trio at Stanford with a fourth place finish in her section of the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.40.
The final event of the weekend for the Gaels also happened to be the busiest, with Saint Mary's sending 13 competitors to the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, hosted by Cal. After her excellent showing at Stanford just a day earlier, Jaden DeSouza stole the spotlight in Berkeley, winning the 400m hurdles with her first ever sub-1 minute run at the event. Three Gaels, Kaylee Barnes, Emily Field and Michaela Martin, placed in the top-10 in the mile, finishing in third, seventh and ninth respectively. Last, but certainly not least, Ana Mercado and Klara Frih each finished in the top-10 in the 800m, finishing in third and seventh respectively.
The Gaels will next compete in two weeks at the Johnny Mathis Invitational back at San Francisco State.
