SB | Late Comeback Effort Comes Up Short in Finale at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. — Saint Mary's (19-17, 2-1 WCC) dropped the finale of their WCC opening series at Pacific (12-22, 1-2 WCC), falling by a 6-3 scoreline. The Gaels again fell into an early hole, and while they rallied to score three in the seventh, they eventually ran out of outs three runs short.
Like game two yesterday, the Tigers jumped out to a four run lead through the first three innings. The Gaels loaded the bases with one out in the second with singles from Victoria Castillo, Lindsay Cabral and Mia Zabat, but left them loaded following a groundout and a popout.
After the four runs through three, Odhi Vasquez bounced back to toss back to back scoreless innings, but the offense couldn't rally behind her. The Tigers would add two insurance runs in the sixth before Vasquez gave way to Avrey Wolverton who logged the final out of the sixth.
The Gael offense came to life in the seventh with their backs against the wall. Mia Zabat and Tori Cervantes led off the frame with back-to-back single, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Sam Buckley. Camille Lara dropped down another bunt, legging out the single, and scoring Zabat, followed by a pinch hit RBI single from Dominique Oliveira, scoring Cervantes for her first collegiate run driven in. With two outs, Kiah Silva beat a ground ball to the pitcher for an infield single, scoring Camille Lara, but the Gaels surge would end there, as a Taylor Lane groundout to short would end the game.
Victoria Castillo logged her second collegiate three hit ballgame, and her first since her freshman year. Kiah Silva had her third straight two hit game, going 6-for-9 for the weekend. Avrey Wolverton closed out the game, recording the final out, moving to 4.1 consecutive scoring innings.
The Gaels will return home to take on Florida State on Wednesday, April 9. First pitch will be at 3 PM from Cottrell Field.
