BSB | Saint Mary’s Enters Goss Stadium to Take on 8th Ranked Oregon State in Second Ever NCAA Regional Appearance

CORVALLIS, Ore. - We are just one day away from the Gaels second ever appearance in the NCAA Regional as they are set to take on eighth ranked Oregon State for the first time since 2017. The Gaels have won nine of their last ten games entering the weekend including a 4-1 stretch to secure their second WCC Tournament Championship in program history.

The road was never easy for the gritty Gaels as they started conference play with three straight series defeats giving them a 2-7 record. They then went on to win their final five conference series with a record of 13-2 to finish in third place in the WCC standings for the second consecutive season. They suffered a heartbreaking 14-inning defeat in game one of the championship slate on Saturday to San Diego, but bounced back to win the if necessary game 9-8 to secure the tournament championship and their second ever bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Gaels went winless in their last regional appearance back in 2016 but will have an opportunity to make more history this season and secure their first ever NCAA Tournament victory on one of the biggest stages inside Goss Stadium against the eighth ranked Beavers. First pitch is slated for 5:00 PM and can be streamed live on ESPN+. USC and TCU will duke it out in game one of the regional earlier on Friday starting at 12:00 PM.

GAELS OUTLOOK

Eddie Madrigal Enters Career Ranks with MVP Caliber Season…

Eddie Madrigal has been an absolute revelation in his third year with the program, putting up career numbers offensively and leading the Gaels to their second ever NCAA Regional appearance. Madrigal will head to Corvallis with a .372 batting average, 86 hits, 21 home runs, 77 RBI and a whopping 1.183 OPS. Madrigal has also broken single-season program records in runs scored (64) and RBI (77) and ranks second in single-season hits (86) and homers with 21 on the season.

Madrigal was named to the All-WCC First Team for his first all-conference selection of his career and went on to be named the WCC Tournament Most Outstanding Player for his efforts in the Gaels championship run. He ended the five-game postseason tournament with a .455 average, ten hits, four doubles, two home runs, 13 runs scored and 11 RBI.

The accolades become even more impressive considering Madrigal suffered a season ending knee injury in 2024 just seven games into the season. He has since rehabbed and put together one of the best offensive seasons in program history.

NCAA Regional History…

Well documented, Saint Mary's has only made one NCAA Regional appearance back in 2016 and went 0-2 in that regional hosted by NC State. 2021 Cy Young award winner and current MLB star pitcher Corbin Burnes started game one against Coastal Carolina and kept Saint Mary's in the ballgame, but the Chanticleers held on for a 5-2 victory. 2022 MLB All-Star Tony Gonsolin was also on the Gaels 2016 squad and led that game off with a solo home run as he was a two-way star for the Gaels.

Saint Mary's saw their postseason run come to an end with another narrow 8-5 loss in 13 innings to Navy, bumping them from the double elimination regional format. Memorably, Coastal Carolina went on to win the College World Series that season, defeating Arizona in back-to-back games after dropping the opener of the three-game championship series.

Saint Mary's Boasts League's Best Offense with Impressive Numbers…

Saint Mary's leads the WCC with a .302 team batting average as they possess one of the deepest and most versatile offenses on the west coast. They broke several single-season program records including runs scored (458), doubles (115) and RBI with 405 on the season. They rank inside the top-50 in Division I in batting average, hits and runs scored. Eddie Madrigal anchors the lineup in the leadoff spot while spots 7-through-9 in the lineup have a combined batting average of .307 (Mettam, Armstrong, Griffith).

Cody Kashimoto also leads the country in sacrifice bunts with 21 on the season, making him and Madrigal a dangerous 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup. If Madrigal gets on base to start an inning, it's almost a guarantee Kashimoto bunts him over to give the Gaels two shots at the plate with a runner in scoring position.

Assistant coach Jack Meggs is the team's primary hitting coach and has been a huge asset for the Gaels offense. The former Washington Husky ranked fourth all time in both games started and games played. He was named First Team All-Pac-12 in 2016 and went on to get drafted by the Oakland A's in the 10th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

Series History (Oregon State)...

Both teams have met a combined five times over the last 18 years with the last matchup coming in 2017 at Br. Ronald Gallagher Stadium when Oregon State was the number one ranked team in the nation. Saint Mary's is 2-3 in those five games with their last win over the Beavers coming in 2012 in a non-conference showcase in Arizona. They went on to go 3-1 in that showcase with additional wins over Northern Illinois and 11th ranked Arizona State.

The last time Saint Mary's visited Corvallis was in 2009 when they traveled north for a two-game set, dropping both games and getting outscored 21-6. This is the first time ever the two programs have met in the NCAA Regional.

ABOUT THE BEAVERS

Oregon State will open NCAA Regional action Friday versus Saint Mary's as the entire 64-team bracket was unveiled on Monday. The Beavers enter the regional with a 41-12-1 record, and are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. OSU did not play last weekend and swept Long Beach State from May 15-17 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, completing a 17-2 record at home in the regular season.

The Beavers have a .287 batting average and a 4.42 staff ERA. Oregon State does everything at a high level but their pitching has been a specific highlight all season as they have two players with 14 starts and a sub 4.00 ERA. Both Dax Whitney and Ethan Kleinschmit lead the team with 89 strikeouts each on the season and a combined 12 wins. The backend of their bullpen gets even more impressive with Matthew Morrell and Laif Palmer posting sub 1.50 ERA's and combining for five saves.

Aiva Arquette is the team's everyday shortstop and leads all starters with a .348 batting average including a team high 14 doubles and 17 home runs. Gavin Turley has been in the outfield for the Beavers and is the team's next best power hitter, tallying 15 home runs and a .622 slugging percentage.
