THE LAST TIME A GAEL LED THE WCC IN…
Coming off of a 32 point, career-high scoring night on his birthday in Stockton, Paulius Murauskas eclipsed both 1000 points for his collegiate career (split between Arizona and Saint Mary's) and 500 points in a single season. He continues to lead the WCC with 519 points scored, and becomes the first Gael since Logan Johnson in 2022-23 to score 500 in a single season. The last Gael to lead the WCC in total points at the end of the year was Jordan Ford, who scored 743 in the 2019-20 campaign. Andrew McKeever is another statistical leader in the conference, leading the way with 254 rebounds. He looks to be the second straight Gael to lead the conference in total rebounding, after Mitchell Saxen did so a year ago.
AND THEN THERE WERE THREE
With the Gaels' 72-61 road win over Pacific on Saturday night, the top three schools in the WCC have been locked in, but where each finishes in that top-three is still very much up for grabs. Gonzaga, Santa Clara and Saint Mary's are all separated by just one game. Gonzaga currently sits atop the WCC standings with a 13-1 record, with two wins against Santa Clara and one against the Gaels. The Zags will see Saint Mary's in Moraga in the regular season finale on February 28. Santa Clara sits at 13-2, with a pair of losses to Gonzaga and a home win over the Gaels. The Gaels and Broncos will have their rematch in Moraga on February 25. The Gaels sit a game back of first place at 12-2, and will have chances to knock off both Santa Clara and Gonzaga at home down the stretch in the final week of February. If Saint Mary's is able to win each of their final four matchups (at Seattle U, at Washington State, vs. Santa Clara and vs. Gonzaga), the Gaels would win at least a share of the WCC Regular Season Crown for the fourth straight year.
The Gaels can also move into a tie with Santa Clara for second place in the conference standings with a win over Seattle U on Wednesday night. The top two teams in the WCC regular season earn byes into the semifinals of the 2026 WCC Tournament, which will be played at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas from March 5-10, 2026. Saint Mary's has finished tied for second or higher in the WCC in 18 of the last 22 seasons and has won 25 or more games 15 times in the last 22 seasons.
ROAD WARRIORS
Since the 2022-23 campaign, the Saint Mary's Gaels boast an extremely impressive 30-5 (0.853) record in true road contests entering the week. In that time period, only Houston (33-4) has a better road record. In this stretch, the Gaels have enjoyed many quality wins away from the friendly confines, including wins over Colorado State in Fort Collins, Utah in Salt Lake City and twice over Gonzaga in Spokane. This season, Saint Mary's is 6-2 in true road games, which included a 70-61 nonconference road win at Davidson.
ABOUT THE REDHAWKS
After an 11-2 start in non-conference play, the Seattle U Redhawks have struggled to get in rhythm in WCC play in their first year back in the conference, with just a 5-9 conference record. After 20+ wins in each of his first three seasons at the helm, fifth year head coach Chris Victor has already improved on his 14 wins from last year, but will need for his team to surge late in order to get back into 20+ win territory here in 2025-26. The Redhawks have won just one of their last five, but still could finish as high as fourth in a clustered middle of the WCC pack. Seattle U prides themselves on strong defense, ranking in the top three in the conference in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense, turnovers forced per game, and blocks per game. Leading that charge are Will Heimbrodt, who ranks in the top-10 in the country in blocked shots, and Maleek Arington, who ranks in the top-20 in steals. Against the Gaels in Moraga, however, these two teams clashed in a shootout, with the Gaels erasing an eight point first half deficit to win 93-76. Paulius Murauskas and Dillan Shaw combined for 50 points in that one, while Jun Seok Yeo and Will Heimbrodt scored 43 of their own. All-time, Seattle U leads the series 22-11, however, Saint Mary's has won each of the last six meetings.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
In its final year as WCC affiliate members, Washington State, like Seattle U, remains in the middle of the WCC pack, with an 11-16 record and a 6-8 conference mark, tying them for sixth place, with a ceiling of fourth. Second year head coach David Riley has struggled to replicate the success he had in year one with the Cougs, when his team went 19-15. Just two weeks ago, it looked like his team might've had the inside track to lock up a top-four spot in the conference, but three straight losses have pushed them back into the cluster that is fourth through 10th place. This Washington State team can score the ball at an extremely efficient rate, doing so mostly from the perimeter, where they shoot at 36.8 percent for the year, making 9.4 on average per game. Ace Glass and Rihards Vavers have led that effort, draining a combined 121 triples on the campaign, shooting a combined 39.2 percent from three. In Moraga earlier this year, the Gaels bested the Cougs 88-82. Ace Glass went for 24, but the Gaels had a trio of 20 point scorers - Joshua Dent, Paulius Murauskas and Mikey Lewis - in one of their premiere offensive showings this season. This demonstrated the Cougars struggles on the road, where they are just 1-9 this season. With that win, the Gaels moved to 4-1 all-time against Washington State.
