SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Saint Mary's Beach Volleyball team ran its win streak to four matches in a row today, defeating both WCC foe Pacific and host San Jose State, 5-0 and 3-2 respectively to open up play in the 2026 Battle of the Bay. Head Coach Janice Harrer's squad made quick work of the Tigers, but fell behind 2-0 early to San Jose State. Demonstrating grit and fortitude they managed to win the final three flights against the Spartans, moving to 5-1 for the first time since 2018.
Against the Tigers, the Gaels won each of their flights in straight sets, for their first 5-0 win and their first conference win of the season. Senior Genevieve Bane and freshman Bella Reyes logged their first win together in the two flight, while Angelina Bour and Nya Crump had the most emphatic victory at the ones, winning 21-14, 21-7.
The San Jose State matchup wasn't nearly as smooth sailing for the Gaels, who found themselves in an early 2-0 hole. Clarissa Klein and Hannah Glick started the comeback effort for the Gaels with a straight set victory in the fifth flight, followed by Angie Bour and Nya Crump taking care of business in straight sets at the ones. It all came dow to the third flight, as the Gaels turned to Hannah Couch and Isla Johnson, who entered the match with a combined 4-1 record. Couch and Johnson dropped the first set 21-16, but responded in a big way to take set two, 21-10. In the first-to-15 winner take all third set, Couch and Johnson kept momentum rolling with a decisive 15-9 match clinching set.
The Gaels will be in action in Palo Alto tomorrow, taking on UC Davis and top ranked Stanford to round out their weekend at 12 PM and 2 PM.
