STANFORD, Calif. — The Saint Mary's Beach Volleyball team continued its red-hot start in week two of the season, once again going 3-1, with its lone loss coming against a top-five team after defeating UC Davis 4-1 and then falling to Stanford 4-1 in day two of the Battle of the Bay Tournament. The Gaels are now off to a 6-2 start, matching their best since 2018, and their best under Head Coach Janice Harrer.
The Gaels made it six wins in their first seven matches on the campaign with a 4-1 defeat of UC Davis, matching their best start since 2018. Head Coach Janice Harrer shuffled the deck with the pairings and it paid dividends in the hard fought victory. The Gaels split the opening two points in straight sets, with the win coming from the veteran duo of Genevieve Bane and Hannah Couch at the twos. All three of the odd numbered flights went to a decisive third set, but the Gaels remained cool, calm and collected in all three matches, with Angelina Bour and Nya Crump winning set three of the ones 15-10, Alisia Silverthorn and Bella Reyes winning 15-11 and Hannah Glick and Barret Nolan winning 15-12, taking the 4-1 victory.
Against the top ranked team in the country, Saint Mary's took a point for the first time since 2023. The twos and fours started off the day, and Hannah Couch and Genevieve Bane, once again paired as the twos, fell narrowly, 21-19 in the opening set, but fell in the second set after hard fought match. In the odds, the three (Clarissa Klein and Bella Reyes) and five (Hannah Glick and Isla Johnson) flights for the Gaels both forced a third, and Glick/Johnson won the third to secure the Gaels their first point against the Cardinal in three years.
The Gaels will next head to Honolulu for the Heineken Queen's Cup on Waikiki Beach. That event will span from March 3 to March 5.
