SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team saw its four-game win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon after San Jose State (4-6) won game three 8-0 at Excite Ballpark. The Gaels were held scoreless for the first time this season and had a season-low four hits as SJSU starting pitcher David Thomas went the distance, pitching all nine innings for the complete game shutout.
Jacob Johnson, Makoa Sniffen, Brett Williams and Cody Kashimoto were responsible for the team's four hits on the day for Saint Mary's (6-4). Sniffen and Johnson are now both hitting .400 for the season while catcher Brett Williams got his fourth start of the season behind the plate and recorded his seventh hit of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior transfer Cam Staton made his third start of the season and aside from a four-run third inning, was solid again as he pitched into the sixth inning and recorded a season high eight strikeouts. Staton struck out the side in the pivotal third inning but a one-put error extended the inning, putting runners on first and second. San Jose State made the Gaels pay with an RBI single the next at-bat followed by a three-run homer from Alan Ramirez to give them a 4-0 lead.
Redshirt sophomore Finn Chapman finished the sixth inning for Staton and then sophomore Diego Emerling closed the game for the Gaels with two innings of relief in his second appearance of the season.
Saint Mary's had its best scoring opportunity in the seventh inning after leadoff singles from Johnson and Sniffen. Thomas was able to get out of the jam though with three consecutive outs to end the threat and maintain the shutout. Saint Mary's still leads the four-game series two games to one and will look to avoid the split with a win on Sunday at Excite Ballpark.
