BVB | Gaels Sweep Pacific, Fall in Narrow 3-2 Decision to No. 18 Washington in Home Openers
3/21/2026 8:43:00 PM | Women's Beach Volleyball
MORAGA, Calif. — After playing their first 18 matches of the season away from Moraga, the Saint Mary's beach volleyball team finally got the chance to play in front of a home crowd at Shaw and Knudsen Courts, defeating Pacific 5-0 in their home opener, before falling to 18th ranked Washington 3-2. The Gaels did fall just one game short of their best start over the first 20 games in program history, but still sit at a stellar 15-5 record now beyond the halfway point of their season.
Match one of the day saw the Gaels down the Pacific Tigers for the third time in as many meetings. The Gaels did drop a set to the Tigers in San Jose last week, but made sure they preserved the sweep today at home. The Tigers put up a strong fight in the opening match of the day, the number three flight, but freshmen Bella Reyes and Isla Johnson overcame an early one set to none hole to win in three. Every other Gael flight won in straight sets, headlined by a quick 21-10, 21-9 win from the fourth flight of Annah Legaspi and Alisia Silverthorn.
Immediately following their win over the Tigers, the Gaels squared off with a rested 18th ranked Washington squad, and battled them to the brink, ultimately falling 3-2. After the Gaels fell behind 1-0, Angelina Bour and Clarissa Klein forced a third set from the twos, and even took a 13-11 lead in the set before ultimately falling 15-13 for their first loss as a pair. Legaspi and Silverthorn fell in similar fashion at the four spot, dropping their third set 15-13. The Gaels closed out the day on a high-note, with Genevieve Bane and Hannah Couch winning the ones to move to 6-0 when playing in the top flight together, and Hannah Glick and Barett Nolan remaining undefeated on the season, moving to 9-0 in the fives.
The Gaels will see both Pacific and Washington again tomorrow at noon and 3 p.m. respectively.
