LOS ANGELES — Let the accolades continue to shower the Gaels, as senior pitcher Odhi Vasquez has been recognized as the best pitcher in the nation this past week by DI Softball, Softball on SI and Softball America. Vasquez becomes the first Gael to win a National Player of the Week honor since Sam Buckley did it following the week ending Mar. 23, 2025.
Vasquez picked up the win in all three of the Gaels victories against ranked foes No. 14 Washington (*2) and No. 24 Stanford. The Upland, California native went the distance in the weekend opener against the Huskies, a 5-2 come-from-behind victory. She then came out of the pen against the Huskies in an 11 inning gauntlet, entering the game seventh tied at two apiece, and worked five scoreless frames, allowing her team to pull ahead in the top half of the 11th before slamming the door shut in the bottom half. Rounding out the week, Vasquez tossed the final three innings allowing just one hit and no runs against Stanford, earning the win in that one.
Vasquez is currently on an epic streak of 17 consecutive outings without suffering a loss on her statline. She has already tallied a career best 15 wins, on of just 17 players in the country with 15+ wins. She also tied the program record with her 46th career victory in her final outing of the weekend against Stanford.
