SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Coming off of a week that featured three ranked wins, it should come as no surprise that a pair of Gaels have once again swept the West Coast Conference weekly awards, as Sam Buckley has captured her second WCC Player of the Week honor of the year, while Odhi Vasquez has earned her third WCC Pitcher of the Week nod. The Gaels are now the first team in the WCC this season to sweep these awards twice this season.
Odhi Vasquez pitched the Gaels to all three of their ranked wins (two against No. 14 Washington and one against No. 24 Stanford), going 15 full innings, surrendering just two runs on six hits and fanning 17. She tied the program win record with her 46th win against Stanford on Saturday afternoon, and became just the second ever Gael to strike out 400 in her career. Vasquez now has worked 17 straight appearances without suffering a loss, and is one of 15 players in the country with at least 15 wins.
It was also a historic week for Sam Buckley, leading the Gaels to their 11 inning win over the Huskies on Friday afternoon, with a pair of home runs, accounting for all three runs driven in against Washington. Those two home runs tied, then broke the program career home run record for Buckley, her 25th and 26th career "BUCKLEY BOMBS". Buckley also provided the go-ahead triple in game one against the Huskies, and the go-ahead RBI double in the Gaels win over Stanford.
Buckley, Vasquez and the Gaels will now shift their focus back to their WCC slate, taking on the only other unbeaten team in conference play, the Seattle U Redhawks this weekend in the Emerald City. The three game series opens Friday, April 10.
