MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's men's soccer fell to the Marquette Golden Eagles 2-0 in the first-ever matchup against the Big East side. The Gaels will now return to Moraga for the 2026 home opener versus the Sacramento State Hornets on Thursday, August 27th at 5:00 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's started the game back and forth in possession with the Golden Eagles, remaining strong in defense and holding the Big East side to no shots through the first 25 minutes of play. Junior goalkeeper Sam Bentley came up big with two key saves in the first half, while redshirt senior Luke Schaefer brought the energy with two shots in the first half. Another spark plug off the bench was freshman midfielder Cyrus Shafie, who recorded a team-high two shots on goal and gave the Golden Eagles defense trouble all afternoon.

Capitalizing on a cross in the 69th minute was freshman Tomiwa Adewumi, who netted his second career goal in as many matches to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Gaels created chances as the game progressed, but a penalty kick goal in the 87th minute all but solidified the match for Marquette. Sunday's contest was tight the entire way, as the Gaels outshot the Golden Eagles 11-9 and kept the match close till the final whistle.

GAME NOTES

Sam Bentley recorded 2+ saves in back-to-back matches, bringing his career total to 102 saves.
Center back Surafel Abebe and midfielder Jaydon Whittaker played the full 90 once again, while midfielder Tate Gutierrez and defender Eemil Laamanen played the full 90 in their first collegiate starts.
Cyrus Shafie led the way with two shots on goal off the bench, while eight different Gaels recorded a shot during the match, including a game-high three shots from forward Luke Schaefer.

LOOKING AHEAD
Saint Mary's now returns to Moraga for the home opener against the Sacramento State Hornets on Thursday, August 27th at 5:00 p.m. The Gaels will then head south to take on the San Jose State Spartans on Sunday, August 30th at 1:00 p.m. Thursday's match will continue Lamorinda Week for Saint Mary's Athletics, with tickets $5 off and available for purchase online at smcgaels.com/tickets, and the match available to stream on ESPN+.
