WSOC | Souvanaphong Earns First Career WCC Defensive Player of the Week Award with a Pair of Shutouts

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Soraya Souvanaphong earned two more shutouts this past week to be named the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
Souvanaphong had a pair of saves in Thursday's dominant win over UC Davis and then recorded a career-high three saves in a scoreless draw with No. 14 Georgetown on Sunday, helping extend the Gaels' unbeaten streak to ten games dating back to last season. The streak ranks the third longest in program history, and Saint Mary's also made history with a fourth consecutive shutout to start the 2026 season, the longest shutout run to start a season in program history.
Souvanaphong, along with a stout backline for the Gaels, have not allowed a goal all season, the only team in the WCC to do so and one of 19 teams in the country in that category. The San Diego native currently leads the WCC with four shutouts, as Saint Mary's is on track for another historic defensive season here in 2026.
Saint Mary's will hit the road for just one game in week three, taking on USC on Sunday, August 30 for the first matchup with the Trojans since 2015. The game can be streamed live on Big Ten Plus and additional game information can be found at smcgaels.com.
