MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team fell 4-1 in just the second all-time meeting with the Marist Red Foxes on Friday. The Gaels pulled to within one goal in the 48th minute thanks to a converted penalty from second-year forward Cameron Kobey but Marist would net a pair of late goals to seal a 4-1 victory on the road and their first against the Gaels in program history.

Saint Mary's saw a trio of newcomers make their first start of the season including Max Owusu-Antwi, Brett Seemuller and goalkeeper Nathan Peeler. Kobey netted his team leading second goal of the season on the penalty attempt while Ryan Firestone led the group with three shot attempts over his 40 minutes of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Marist jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the sixth minute off a corner kick but the Gaels were able to weather the storm and out shoot the Red Foxes 6-3 for the remainder of the half. The deficit remained at one at the break but another quick strike in the 47th minute would double the Red Foxes lead to start the second half.

Saint Mary's answered twice in a six-goal affair last week against San Jose State and were able to respond once again on Friday thanks to a penalty kick goal off the right boot of Kobey in the 48th minute. Cyrus Shafie made a darting run into the box and was played in off a long ball from center back Surafel Abebe. Shafie and the Marist defender would collide and the center official would award a penalty for the Gaels in which Kobey converted for his second of the season.

The game would only intensify from this point on but Marist found the finishing touches with goals in the 80th and 86th minute to wrap up a 4-1 road victory, their first of the 2026 season. 90-minute efforts for the Gaels came from Talan Rochelle, Cameron Kobey and Eemil Laamanen.
