Saint Mary's College Athletics Gaels

Jack Meggs

Jack Meggs joined the Gaels coaching staff in 2023 and played a big role in the team's offensive improvement that season, boosting their batting averageĀ from .235 in 2022 to .267 in 2023. The team's 76 home runs hit in 2023 were a Saint Mary’s College single-season record, with Christian Almanza and Coleman Schmidt sharing the team lead with 16 each. That offensive success carried over into the 2024 season as Saint Mary's was one of the best offensive teams in the WCC, leading the league in home runs (103) and ranking second in team batting average (296).Ā

Prior to joining the Gaels coaching staff, Meggs served as the hitting coach at the University of Kansas (Big12 Conference) during the 2021-22 school year. Meggs oversaw a Jayhawk offense that more than doubled their home run output from the previous season from 27 to 55 and improved their extra base hit total by 30%. Along with the power surge the Jayhawks improved their team batting average under Meggs and saw their stolen bases improve by 20%...landing four Jayhawk hitters on the All Big 12 team. Ā Before becoming the full-time hitting coach at Kansas in the fall of 2021, Meggs served as a graduate assistant with the Jayhawks while earning his Master’s Degree in Sports Management.

Meggs, a Seattle, Washington native was a communications major at the University of Washington where he was a major part of the Husky lineup for four years. As a Husky, Meggs helped lead the team to regional births at both Ole Miss in 2014 and Vanderbilt in 2016. Meggs saw his 2014 Huskies ranked as high as fourth in the nation and in 2016 Meggs presence was felt in the Vandy regional where he hit a game winning homer to beat the Commodores on their home field.

Following a summer in Brewster playing in the Cape Cod League where he hit .313 to rank among the league’s best, in 2016 Meggs was an All Pac-12 First Team selection as a center fielder and was also named to the All Pac 12 Defensive team. A two year captain for the Huskies, Meggs was selected All Pac 12 again in 2017 on his way to being a 10th round pick (291st overall) by the Oakland A’s. Prior to signing with the A’s Meggs finished his career at the UW ranked fourth all time in both games started and games played.

Shortly after his arrival, Meggs was selected the New York Penn League Player of the Week after homering twice and hitting over .500 during week one of the 2017 season. Meggs would go on to hit .290 before a knee injury ended his season. After two years in the A’s organization Meggs went on to sign a free-agent deal with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2020, but ultimately landed at KU following the cancelation of the 2020 Minor League Baseball season due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Meggs was born in Chico, CA to Teresa and Lindsay Meggs. Lindsay was the Head Baseball Coach at the University of Washington from 2010-2022 and Teresa is a registered nurse in the Seattle area.
Meggs has an older brother, Joe, and an older sister Kelly. Joe served as an assistant coach at the University of Washington, where he was an All Conference outfielder before spending time in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system.

Kelly played college basketball at UC Irvine for four years and one year of Pac 12 softball at the University of Washington where she received her Masters Degree in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership. She now works as a Physical Therapist in the Sports Medicine Department at Duke University.
