Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team (2-8-3) was defeated by the San Jose State Spartans (5-7), 2-1, on Friday, October 11, on Garaventa Field. Patrick Lower scored the Gaels lone goal.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead at the 13:15 minute mark when Tomislav Jozinovic beat a Gael defender and found an open look, scoring an unassisted goal past goalkeeper Aaron Valdez.
At the end of the first half the Spartans led 1-0, while SJSU outshot the Gaels 5-3.
The Gaels tied up the score in the second half at the 73:34 minute mark when Alex Monsalve assisted Lower for a beautiful shot to the upper right corner.
But with 1:04 left in the game the Spartans' Fausto Villegas scored the game-winner on an open goal to give SJSU the 2-1 victory.
SMC's Valdez recorded six saves in the game while SJSU's Michael Lawrence tallied four saves. The Spartans outshot the Gaels 14-7 in the match.
The Gaels will return to action on Sunday, October 13 when they host the UNLV Rebels. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM on Garaventa Field.
