Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team (3-8-3) defeated the UNLV Rebels (7-5), 2-1, on Sunday, October 13 on Garaventa Field. The Gaels' Patrick Lower recorded a goal and an assist, both in the second half.
It looked as if the Gaels would score first at the 28:02 minute mark, when Niles Almarinez's goal was called back due to a foul to the keeper.
The Rebels took a 1-0 lead at the 34:58 minute mark when Frederick Kelly blasted a shot past SMC's Aaron Valdez on an assist from Alex Hernandez.
In the second half the Gaels tied up the score at one when Lower scored his fourth goal of the season. Derek Youpel's cross got by the UNLV keeper and Lower smashed it in at the 63:22 minute mark.
SMC's Juan Lopez gave the Gaels their first lead of the game and the game-winner when he slashed through the goalie box on a shot attempt by Matthew Walker. Lopez was able to get a foot on the ball, misdirecting the shot and scoring at the 83:32 minute mark. Matthew Walker and Lower earned the double-assist.
The Gaels outshot the Rebels 13-9, while SMC's goalkeeper Aaron Valdez recorded three saves and UNLV's Justin Dennis records three. The Gaels' Valdez earned his first collegiate victory.
