San Francisco, CA - Junior forward Josh Hansen scored three first half goals as the USF Dons defeated visiting Saint Mary's (3-9-3/0-1-1 WCC) 4-0 in the Dons' West Coast Conference opener Friday night at Negoesco Stadium.
Hansen opened the scoring at 12:16 when he headed in a Mike Varas free-kick at 12:16. Less than seven minutes later, he volleyed home a pass from David Martin at the 18:50 mark to give the Dons (7-5, 1-0 WCC) a 2-0 lead.
Canadian freshman Marko Bedenikovic made it 3-0 at 31:33 when he hit a low shot from 20 yards into the lower left corner of the goal, before Hansen closed out the scoring.
Hansen then took a short pass from Nick Kounalakis at 44:03 and scored the final goal from 12 yards.
The 4-0 win was USF's largest margin of victory in a West Coast Conference game since the Dons shutout Gonzaga by the same score in 1994.
Derek Youpel, Robert Orum and Brian Voltattorni all finished with one shot on goal for the Gaels. Both Mark Muleady and Aaron Valdez finished with three saves on the night.
The Gaels will host Dominican University on Sunday, October 20 in a non-conference match up on Garaventa Field. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon.
