Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team (4-9-3) were victorious over the Dominican University Penguins (6-8-1), 2-1, on Sunday, October 20, on Garaventa Field.
It took just 12:51 for the Gaels to score as Patrick Lower blasted in a goal on a beautiful assist by Robert Orum and Brian Voltattorni. Voltattorni's cross met Orum as he headed the ball over to Lower for the easy score.
At the end of the first half the Gaels led 1-0, while outshooting the Penguins 7-3.
In the second half the Gaels added another score to advance their lead to 2-0. Jack Woodley's shot was deflected to Lower, who passed it over to Derek Youpel. Youpel headed the ball in from just five yards out for his fourth goal on the season at the 65:16 minute mark.
Dominican got on the scoreboard at the 85:30 minute mark when Kevin Bartel scored an unasissted goal with a shot to the lower left corner.
SMC's goalkeeper Kealii Kuehu played well in his first collegiate start, recording three saves. DU's Ben Millar and Robert Morales tallied three total saves.
The Gaels will return to West Coast Conference action on Sunday, October 27, when they host #7 Loyola Marymount. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
