
Men's Soccer Signs Seven Players for 2002

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team announced its 2002 recruiting class on Wednesday, February 27. Head coach Steve Rammel and his staff landed seven recruits, all out of high school for the upcoming 2002 season.
Omid Aldaghi (Tuscon, AZ), a four-year varsity athlete at Salpointe High School, finished his senior year with 18 goals and 13 assists. He was honored as the Southern Arizona Player of the Year after leading his team to four straight Southern Region Championships. Aldaghi was also selected to the All-Southern Region Second Team as a sophomore and junior. He was also recruited by Washington, North Carolina State and New Mexico.
Matthew Walker (Fresno, CA), finished his senior year with 26 goals at Bullard High School. A four-time first team all-league selection, Walker also garnered First Team All-Valley last season. As a junior he was honored as a Second Team All-Valley selection. He was also a member of the Cal-North State Team in 1998 and 1999 and Olympic Development Program (ODP) Region IV team in 1999. Walker, lettered in baseball at Bullard High and is the school's Valedictorian. He was also recruited by Portland, San Jose State and Notre Dame.
Patrick Lower (Jacksonville, OR), was a three-letter athlete in soccer, basketball and track at South Medford High School. In his senior year he tallied 10 goals and eight assists and was selected to the First Team All-Southern Oregon Conference for the second straight season. Lower was also a part of the Oregon State Team in 1997-2001 and helped lead his club team to a State Championship in 2001. He was also recruited by Washington and Chico State.
Brian Boehne (Salem, OR) provided South Salem High School with eight goals and 10 assists in his senior campaign. That was good enough to be honored as a Second Team All-Oregon selection, first team all-region, First Team All-Valley League, Team MVP and the Team's Most Inspirational Player. His junior year he garnered first team all-region and First Team All-Valley League honors. He helped lead his club team, F.C. Portland, to an Oregon State Championship in the 2000-01 season. Boehne was a district meet qualifier in the 1500m run in 2000. He was also recruited by Gonzaga, UC Santa Barbara and Seattle University.
Michael Johnson (Menifee, CA), a 6'4'' senior out of Murietta Valley High School, finished his last year with 18 goals and 10 assists. His play was good enough to earn him National Soccer Coaching Association of America (NSCAA) All-America honors. During his junior year he was rewarded first team all-league, Second Team All-CIF and Team MVP. He was also recruited by UC Irvine and New Mexico.
Adam Zielske (Tacoma, WA), a four-year starter at Curtis High School finished his senior season with 10 goals and 15 assists. As a two-time team captain and Team MVP, he was also honored with first team all-league honors both his junior and sophomore year. He helped lead his club team, the Federal Way Storm, to state championships in 1999 and 2000. Zielske was also a three-time member of the Region IV ODP team in Washington. He was also recruited by Providence, St. John's and Notre Dame.
Rounding out this year's recruiting class is Derek Youpel (Fresno, CA), out of San Joaquin Memorial High School. In his senior season he put up unbelievable numbers of 27 goals and 34 assists. Youpel was a four-time first team all-league selection and garnered the Tourney Sport USA All-American Team in 2001. He was also a two-time all-valley selection and helped lead his team to a valley championship in 1999. He was also recruited by Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly, Fresno State and UC Irvine.
