Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team (0-0-1) tied the Fresno State Bulldogs (0-0-1), 2-2, in a thrilling match on Friday, August 30, in the Saint Mary's Stadium. Freshman's Matthew Walker and Patrick Lower both recorded their first career goal.
The Bulldogs went up 1-0 after a scoreless first-half on a shot to the upper net by Eli Delgado, his first of the season, at the 59:06 minute mark.
The Gaels would tie up the score at one apiece as Walker slipped a beautiful shot to the right side on a Derek Youpel assist at the 60:10 minute mark. SMC would then take the lead with three minutes left to go as Lower headed in his first collegiate goal thanks to a cross from teammate Robert Orum.
Fresno State would quickly retaliate on an unassisted goal from Jeff Margarian with two minutes left to play.
In the final two overtimes both teams had opportunities to score but the game ended with a 2-2 tie. SMC goalkeeper Josh Duffy tallied four saves in his first career start in between the posts, while FSU's goalkeeper, Jeremy Proud recorded six saves on the evening.
Saint Mary's next game will be against San Diego State in San Diego, CA on Monday, September 2. Kick-off is scheduled for noon.
