Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team (2-4-2) defeated the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters (3-4-1), 3-1, on Saturday, September 21, on Garaventa Field in a non-conference match. The Gaels Alex Monsalve scored two goals for the Gaels in his first start of the season.
Saint Mary's began a scoring route in the first half when the Gaels tallied three goals. Alex Monsalve contributed two goals, the first one came at the 9:11 minute mark when he blasted a shot that ricocheted off of the keepers hand into the goal. Brian Voltattorni earned the assist. The second one came on a corner kick, Monsalve scored single handedly with a little help from the far post at the 16:44 minute mark. The Gaels then took a 3-0 lead as Erick Balderrama found the back of the net with an assist from Voltattorni and Niles Almarinez at the 31:46 minute mark.
The Otters would keep the Gaels scoreless in the second half and score a goal to end the shutout. CSUMB's Nick Torricell scored on a rebound after SMC's Aaron Valdez made a beautiful save. Assist was earned by Nathan Northup.
The Gaels outshot the Otters 21-3 in the contest. Goalkeeper Josh Duffy and Aaron Valdez combined for one save while CSUMB's Christian Matterazzi recorded six saves.
The Gaels will return to action on Friday, September 27 when they play Air Force in the Denver Tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
