Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team beat Fresno State 2-1 Friday at Garaventa Field, giving them consecutive wins for the first time this season. The Gaels' Adam Zielske scored the game's winning goal in the 80th minute, improving Saint Mary's record to 3-6 on the season.
Saint Mary's, playing the first game of the 2003 Saint Mary's Soccer Classic, was out-shot 20-9 by the Bulldogs, but made the most of their opportunities inside the box.
After giving up an early goal to Fresno State's Dan Oka in the 12th minute, the Gaels answered in the 33rd minute when freshman Alex Christlieb headed an Anthony Butler pass past Fresno State goalkeeper Eric Kronberg. The goal is Christlieb's first of the season and first as a Gael.
In the 80th minute, Adam Zielske took a pass from Matthew Walker and lobbed the ball over Kronberg. Kronberg deflected the ball slightly from the right side of the box, but the ball trickled in for the eventual game-winning goal.
Despite giving up an early goal, the Saint Mary's defense played well. The Gaels were led defensively by senior goalkeeper Kellan Wilson. Wilson recorded nine saves in the victory and also improved his record to 3-6.
The Gaels return to action Sunday, when they play their second game of the Saint Mary's Soccer Classic against the Columbia Lions. Game time is set for noon at Garaventa Field.
