Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team could not quite get over hump against San Diego as their late comeback effort was cut short in a 4-2 defeat on Friday afternoon, from Saint Mary's Stadium. After the loss, the Gaels fall to 6-5-1 overall and 3-2-0 in conference while the Toreros improve to 6-2-2 on the year and 2-2 in conference action.
The Gaels got on the board early, just seven minutes into the contest, Saint Mary's capitalized on a corner kick opportunity. Freshman Carlos Diaz found Alex Christlieb far post who then flicked a pass onto senior Derek Youpel who took care of the rest to give SMC the early 1-0 advantage.
The Toreros would then tally three straight goals to distance themselves from the Gaels. At the 21-minute mark, Michael Caso found net when he eluded the Gael defense and blasted a shot far post from 12-yards out.
USD would tack on their second goal of the half at the 36-minute mark, when Caso was on the giving end of a goal. Pohl followed up a shot that Caso took that caromed off SMC goalkeeper Brian Mason.
Early in the second half, the Toreros would add some insurance when Tannen Wels found the back of the net off a bad clearance from the Gael defense.
Saint Mary's would not quit though as they pounded USD goalkeeper Lance Friesz with shots and pressure. Diaz cut the lead to one at the 74-minute mark, when he bent net from the far post off a pass from Mathew Fitzgerald and Anthony Butler.
The Toreros then put the game away when Adam Mariani completed a one-on-one off a shot deflection from Ryan Guy.
Offensively, the Gaels were led by Diaz's four shots and three on goal. Butler added three for the Gaels. Caso led USD with four shots with two on goal.
Between the pipes, Mason made a game-high six saves while Friesz made five stops on the afternoon.
Saint Mary's will have chance for redemption when they open the second round of round-robin play against San Diego. The Gaels will begin their road-trip against the Toreros on Friday, October 27 at 2 p.m. SMC will end its Southern California trip against Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Ocotber 23 at 7 p.m.
