Los Angeles, CA- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team scored a late goal but it proved to be too little too late as the Gaels fell to the Lions 2-1 Sunday afternoon from Sullivan Field. Senior Derek Youpel scored the lone goal for the Gaels. After the loss, SMC falls to 7-5-1 overall and 4-3 in West Coast Conference play while LMU improves to 5-5-4 overall and 3-2-1 in conference action.
The Lions got an early goal in each period to distance themselves from the Gaels. In the 10th minute of the contest Jimmy Burling scorched the back of the net with 35-yard bomb that was assisted by Bobby Burling and Junior Ybarra.
At the 58-miunute mark the Lions would tack on what proved to be the game-winner. Trini Gomez tallied his fifth goal on the season when he found net off a free kick.
After several opportunities including a shot off the cross bar, the Gaels got on the board. With less than three minutes left in regulation, Youpel recorded his second goal of the season and second of conference play when he beat LMU goalkeeper Robert Flores with a header. The header was set up on a throw-in by Carlos Diaz that was then flicked on by senior Michael Johnson. The assist marks Diaz's league-leading 10th on the year.
Offensively, SMC was led by five different players who tallied two shots a piece. Johnson was on frame with both shots. Armando Melendez led LMU with four shots, putting one on goal.
In net, sophomore Brian Mason recorded a game-high seven saves. Flores made three stops en route to the victory.
Saint Mary's will return to the pitch on Friday, October 28 to host rival Santa Clara. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Saint Mary's Stadium.
