Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team had plenty of opportunities but none managed to find the back of the net as the No. 4-ranked Santa Clara Broncos took a 1-0 victory Friday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. After the loss, SMC falls to 7-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in conference while SCU improves to 12-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in league play.
With the Gaels constantly knocking on the SCU goalmouth, the Broncos were the ones to find net. At the 76-minute mark Jeff Scott found room 35-yards out and blasted a shot that found the top of the net.
The goal proved to be all the Broncos would need as SCU goalkeeper Kevin Sweeney recorded a game-high seven shots en route to the shutout.
The Gaels were all over the Broncos in the first half posting eight of their 13 shots in the period. Early in the half, junior Anthony Butler used his speed to elude the Bronco defense but saw his goal stripped away as it was cleared from the line by a SCU defender.
Butler led the Gaels with three shots, putting two on goal. Senior Michael Johnson, freshman Carlos Diaz and Michael Clegg got off two shots apiece.
Kelechi Igwe and Peter Lowry both tallied three shots for the Broncos. SMC sophomore goalkeeper Brian Mason recorded four saves on the afternoon.
The Gaels will return to the pitch on Sunday, October 30 to play Bay Area rival San Francisco. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Negoesco Stadium.
