Men's Soccer Suffers 4-1 Setback Against San Francisco

San Francisco, CA- After knotting the score at one with fifteen minutes left in regulation, the Saint Mary's men's soccer team gave up three quick goals to fall 4-1 to San Francisco Sunday night from Negoesco Stadium. After the loss, SMC falls to 7-8-1 overall and 4-5-0 in conference play while USF improves to 8-5-3 overall and 3-3-2 in league.

USF got on the board first at the 27th minute when David Martin took a pass from Aaron Chandler that he nailed far post from nine yards out.

Saint Mary's senior forward Derek Youpel evened the score at one at the 75-minute mark when he converted on a penalty shot. But four minute later San Francisco netted its first of three consecutive goals.

Martin tallied his second goal of the match which proved to be the game-winner when he found net off a Brandon McDonald pass at the 79-minute mark.

Four minutes later Chandler would be on the receiving end when he netted a goal on a breakaway set up by Ben Dessard.

Robert Smith added some late insurance in the 86th minute when he was the recipient of a Chandler and Dessard set up from seven yards out.

Offensively, the Gaels were out-shot 13-3, with the three shots belonging to Matthew Fitzgerald, Derek Youpel and Michael Clegg. The Dons were led by Chandler's five shots.

In net, sophomore Brian Mason recorded a game-high four saves. Geremy Uhl tallied no stops en route to the victory.

The Gaels will return to the friendly confines of Saint Mary's Stadium for their final three games of the regular season. SMC will host its next match on Friday, November 4 against the Gonzaga Bulldogs at 2 p.m. before playing Portland on Sunday, November 6 at 2 p.m.
