Portland, OR- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team got two early goals within four minutes of each other to down host Portland 2-0 Friday night from Merlo Field. Freshman Michael Clegg opened the scoring and junior Alex Christlieb provided the insurance as the Gaels defeated the Pilots for the first time since the 2000 season. With the win, SMC improves to 5-4-1 overall and 2-1 in West Coast Conference play.
At the 26-minute mark, the newcomer took a Derek Youpel pass from 13-yards out and blasted it across the net, far-post to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead. The early goal marks his eighth on the season. Clegg's fourth game-winner ties the single season mark held by six other SMC players.
Four minutes later, the Gaels would put the game away, when Carlos Diaz found Christlieb on a throw-in for the five-yard finish. Christlieb has now found the back of the net three times this season and the assist is the newcomer's fifth on the year.
The early goal is all the defense needed, as they posted their fifth shutout on the season. For sophomore goalkeeper Brian Mason, it marks his 10th shutout of his career, which ranks him in a tie with Rob McDonald for first place in the career annals. Mason also tallied four saves on the night, which adds to his league-leading mark.
Offensively, the Gaels were led by Clegg's three shots, with two on goal. Senior Adam Zielske and Diaz added two shots apiece.
Saint Mary's fifth win of the season equals last year's total of five and the Gaels' 2-1 WCC start is their best since the 1999 season.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Sunday, October 9 to finish its Pacific Northwest road-trip against Gonzaga. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Eastern Washington University.
