Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to Gonzaga in West Coast Conference play Friday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. Gonzaga's Scott Meslin tallied the game-winner with less than a minute left in the first overtime. After the loss the Gaels fall to 7-9-1 overall and 4-6-0 in WCC action.
After the Gaels were pressuring the Gonzaga goal for the majority of the second half and overtime it only took one quick transition for the Bulldogs to put the game away.
In the 99th minute Grant Lundberg crossed the ball into the box and found Meslin for the one-touch game-winner from nine yards out.
Saint Mary's jumped right out of the gate and got on the board first when freshman Michael Clegg found net in the third minute of the match. Sophomore David Blanchard connected with junior Anthony Butler who ditched the Bulldog defense and found an open Clegg five yards out. Clegg took the cross and flicked it with his right foot into the back of the net. The goal marks Clegg's 11th on the season.
The Bulldogs evened the score at the 15-minute mark when Lundberg took a Mark Stock pass and found net far post from nine yards out.
SMC had its opportunities late in the second half and in the overtime period. The Gaels recorded 14 of their 21 shots during that stretch.
The Gaels were led offensively by Clegg's six shots and three on goal. Butler tallied three, putting one on goal. Luke Miller led the Zags with four shots, placing three on frame.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Mason tallied a game-high nine saves and Vito Higgins tallied seven en route to the victory.
Saint Mary's will return to the pitch on Sunday, November 6 to face the Portland Pilots. The game will mark the beginning of senior week as the Gaels will bid farewell to six senior student-athletes. Kickoff against the Pilots is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Saint Mary's Stadium.
