
Men's Soccer Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker to Washington

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team suffered its second loss of the season when it fell 1-0 on a late first half goal to Washington Sunday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 2-2 on the season while the Huskies improve to 2-1 on the year.
With one minute remaining in the first half, Nick Loveless found the net on a header set up by a throw in by Mike Chabala and a flick off the head of Ely Allen.
In the second half the Gaels were all over the Huskies net but were unable to find a score. SMC tallied six of their eight shots in the second period. Freshman Michael Clegg led the Gaels with three shots, senior Matthew Walker added two shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Mason allowed one goal but tallied a game-high five saves. Huskies goalkeeper Chris Eylander recorded the victory after notching the shutout.
Washington tallied 12 shots on the afternoon and was led by Spencer Schmidt who recorded three shots with one on goal. The loss marks the second time in as many years that the Gaels have suffered a 1-0 decision to the Huskies.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday, September 16, when the Gaels take a road-trip to the East Coast and face Delaware. SMC will then play Philadelphia on Sunday, September 18. Both games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
