Newark, DE- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team played Delaware to a 2-2 double-overtime draw Friday afternoon in the first game of the Gaels' East Coast road trip. Freshman Carlos Diaz and junior Alex Christlieb recorded the two SMC goals. With the tie, Saint Mary's stands at 2-2-1 overall while Delaware posts an 0-2-2 season mark.
The Blue Hens started the scoring in the 30th minute when Anthony Talarico drilled a loose ball in the six yard box into the back of the net.
The Gaels responded in the second half with two goals. Christlieb tallied his second goal of the season at the 49-minute mark on a corner kick taken by Diaz. It is the second time this season the two have hooked up on the set play.
Less than nine minutes later, Diaz would be on the receiving end, scoring his first collegiate goal at the 57-minute mark. Junior Matthew Fitzgerald complimented the Diaz run with a through pass that Diaz one-touched from 15-yards out past Delaware goalkeeper Taylor Thames.
Delaware would answer at the 76-minute mark when Talarico tallied his second goal of the match on a shot set up by Justin Arpan.
The Blue Hens out-shot the Gaels 22-19 but SMC put the pressure on in the second period with 10 shots of their own. Fitzgerald and Diaz led the way with three shots a piece, both putting two on goal.
SMC sophomore goalkeeper Brian Mason tallied a game-high seven saves. Thames recorded six for Delaware.
Saint Mary's will cap off its East Coast road trip on Sunday, September 18 against Philadelphia University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST.
